Nimisha is a trained nurse from Kerala. In 2008, she moved to Yemen, dreaming of a better future for her family. Life seemed okay until she crossed paths with a local man named Khalaf al-Azi, a meeting that would change everything.

He helped her start a clinic, but over time, things took a dark turn.

Since foreign women weren’t allowed to run clinics alone in Yemen, Nimisha reportedly entered into a legal arrangement (fake marriage) with Khalaf just to obtain a license. At that time, her real husband had returned to India with their daughter due to Yemen’s unrest.

Together, Nimisha and Khalaf ran a clinic, and all seemed well for a while.

Khalaf’s behavior changed. He became greedy, took away her passport, and began abusing her emotionally and physically. Nimisha was trapped. She wanted to return to India but couldn’t, without her passport.

Her little daughter was with her in Yemen during this painful time.

๐Ÿ“… July 2017 – A Desperate Mistake

When Khalaf fell sick, Nimisha saw a chance to get her passport back. She gave him a sedative injection, hoping to make him unconscious for a while so she could retrieve her documents and escape.

But tragically, the dosage was too much. Khalaf died.

Nimisha confessed in court that her intention was not to kill him only to get her freedom back. But she was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by hanging in 2020.


๐Ÿ’ฐ What is Blood Money?

Under Yemen’s Islamic law, the family of the deceased can choose to forgive the accused in exchange for a financial settlement called blood money or “Diya”.

To save Nimisha, her mother and supporters have raised $1 million (₹8.6 crore) to offer the victim’s family, hoping for forgiveness.

·         Nimisha’s family has officially offered the blood money.
